British singer Adele has indeed earned accolades for her album ‘21’ as it became the top selling album in the year 2011. The singer’s hits like ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Rolling Stone In The Deep’ dominated the playlist in the same year.
But now the album, which was released by independent British label XL Recordings has already sold more than 5 million copies. Earlier, the last album topped the year end chart with more than 5 million copies was in the year 2004 with Usher’s ‘Confessions’ went up to 7.9 million.
The data for all the sales was provided by Neilsen Soundscan for the story. Overall, the music sales by the end of the year 2011, is expected to be up more than 3 percent from last year.
The increase in the sales is a welcome news for the music industry. Just a one percent increase in the digital sales last year created a widespread panic that the format had already plateaued. On the other hand the physical album still outsell the digital albums by a 2:1 margin. But the overall total sales of the albums are split 50-50 between the digital and the physical albums. It has also been observed that the sales of the top selling album of the year have increased.
