American actress and singer Ariana Grande’s album ‘Yours Truly’ went to the top on the Billboard 200 chart this week. Earlier, it seemed like there was going to be a race for the No. 1 album, but Ariana made it to the top in the end, by a sizable margin.
Reports said that 138,000 units of the album were sold in the first week. Just behind Grande, the R&B singer Tamar Braxton comes in at No. 2 with ‘Love & War’, which sold 114,000 units in its first week. Grande also became the first female artist to debut at No. 1 with their first album, since January 2010 when Kesha’s ‘Animal’ opened at No. 1 as well.
On September 6, 2013, there was a bit of competition brewing between ‘Yours Truly’ and ‘Love & War’. During that time, sources from the industry revealed that ‘Yours Truly’ was aiming for a start of around 115,000 to 120,000, while ‘Love & War’ was eyeing a bow of 110,000 to 115,000 units.
Just a day earlier, the camp of Grande launched a successful download album promotion tied to an upcoming holiday party hosted by the ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ singer. Customers who purchased ‘Yours Truly’ through Grande’s website will receive a ticket to one of a series of events with Grande later in 2013.
