It’s been a cool decade since Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne had her first No. 1 single, Girlfriend from her album The Best Damn Thing on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. And in a great comeback that would have fans over-excited, she has announced a brand new album this year after signing on a brand new contract.
Avril Lavigne has just signed on with BMG and she made the official announcement through her Instagram account, posting a short black and white video of her playing the piano, and telling fans about what to expect from the new album. “Incredibly excited to be a part of the @bmg_us family and be working with them on the release of #AL6! So excited to share more with you guys in the coming weeks!”
This upcoming #AL6 album is going to be her sixth full-fledged one, and a follow-up to her self-titled album that was released in 2013 that had contributions from her estranged husband and Nickelback frontman, Chad Kroeger.
In an interview with Billboard, the pop-punk singer said: “I challenged myself as a songwriter and I wanted to write about topics I hadn’t hit on before. There’s the love topic, but a lot of these songs are about life. I’ve experienced a lot over the past few years, and some of the songs just came to me. Concepts and lyrics were flowing and I would have to grab my phone to sing into voice memo and write out my lyrics.”
“I’m working on the final few tracks. BMG and I are now choosing the right producer for the project.”
So, if you think that Avril’s new music is going to be filled with her old-school angsty punk energy, think again. The 32-year-old singer has matured a lot, and vibes with the current pop music scene, admitting to listening to Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran. She says her upcoming album will have her “going back to my roots a little bit. I got my start in church and at country fairs when I was a young child, and I think those earlier influences are definitely coming out now.”
Avril Lavigne has been out of the scene for a while now, since she was diagnosed with Lyme disease a few years ago. That left her bedridden and feeling exhausted and nearly close to death. But like any true artist, she found inspiration even in the darkest of times. We can’t wait for the new Avril to bring us something new!
