BBC’s new music initiative BBC Music’s launch was marked by Beach Boys’ God Only Knows cover.
Launching its ambitious new music initiative BBC Music, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) brought together numerous artists to present an all-star cover of the 1996 Beach Boys classic God Only Knows on October 7, 2014. The ensemble, named as ‘The Impossible Orchestra’, was headed by Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys, who composed and produced the track.
Joining Wilson were popular musicians Sir Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, One Direction, Lorde, Chris Martin, Kylie Minogue, Jake Bugg, Emeli Sandé, Paloma Faith, Sam Smith and Florence Welch.
Rockstars Chrissie Hynde, Brian May and Dave Grohl, classical artists Alison Balsom, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese and Nicola Benedetti, folk performer Eliza Carthy, Senegalese singer Baaba Maal, jazz performer Jamie Cullum, and British Asian Music star Jaz Dhami too completed the reflected diversity intended for the song.
They were accompanied by the BBC’s Zane Lowe, Lauren Laverne, Katie Derham, Gareth Malone and Jools Holland, as well as the Tees Valley Youth Choir and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The single and the launch were broadcast across television, radio and online networks of the BBC.
The new collaborative single is now available for download, the proceeds of which will be forwarded to BBC Children of Need.
