As heavy metal legends Black Sabbath took the stage for the last time as a group, frontman Ozzy Osbourne shouted to the crowd: “Are you having fun?” The Prince of Darkness had a wicked smile for the crowd in their hometown of Birmingham, UK as he teased: “I nearly said, ‘Should we come back and do it again?’ We’re not.”
Black Sabbath played the final show for the farewell tour The End at a 16,000-strong sold out show at Genting Arena in Birmingham. Their tour began in January of 2016 and took them across the United States and back to where they began 49 years earlier, just a few miles from Aston, where as youngsters they were first introduced to that generation’s Blues. Black Sabbath consists of frontman Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi. Original drummer, Bill Ward was not playing for the night since his exit in 2011 due to a contract dispute, but Tommy Clufetos took over and did a brilliant job at the kit.
Their last performance was replete with their biggest hits through the years, including War Pigs, Black Sabbath, Iron Man, Paranoid, among others. Black Sabbath was one of the pioneering bands of heavy metal and have influenced other metal bands that have since been spawned from the darkness.
The night in Birmingham was all about Black Sabbath. There were no special guests involved, and it was a time to relive, for one last time, the band’s magnanimous success over decades that spanned generations. Ozzy was sure to thank fans for their support and said to the crowd: “So it’s the final show. And I’ve got to tell you something, what a journey we’ve all had. It’s f*cking amazing. We started this in 1968 and now it’s 2017 – I don’t f*cking believe that sh*t, man. But you know what? We would not survive if it wasn’t for the fan base. So if you’re a veteran fan, great. If you’re new, welcome. But I can’t tell you enough how grateful we are for your support.”
