Burzum – spell of frustration

Posted on Jan 22, 2010 under Music | No Comment
"i am varg, no ?"

"i am varg, no ?"

Just when I thought Burzum could do some peaceful farming in his hometown Telemark, Norway and get back to making music after serving about 18 years imprisonment, I read somewhere that a movie is being made based on him. ahem !

Burzum has influenced most of what I feel about black metal and it was roughly six years back when I played his album det som engang var. He was one of the first I heard in black metal (its a fight between him and Ancient), and I can never get over his music. What ever it is that he is associated with, for me he remains that teenager who gave me some insane metal. He had to be possessed by an evil spirit to make music like that. And I wish The Crying Orc was a never ending track. Ain’t it ?

bored of chaos !

Now that he is finally out, he is going to have a hard time struggling to stay out of limelight. Nowthat he is no longer a teenager. But from the looks of it that day is not too far when Burzum would want to get back to jail (this time with family) and spend some more peaceful time after being exposed to what is happening on the other side of prison !

Talking about the movie that is being made, Jackson Rathbone (from Twilight) is apparently playing Varg which will be based on a book named Lords Of Chaos. The makers should know there are other ways of making money than touching a subject they obviously do not know. To begin with deciding to drop this idea would be great. The book in question has been shunned by Burzum as being full of crap. So if the makers are reading this, beware - Burzum is once again a free man !

pleasure to kill !

1833 AD – pre-album teaser review

Posted on Jan 13, 2010 under Music | No Comment

Being the biggest fan of black metal fan alive I feel cursed when I have absolutely no Indian black metal releases to look forward to. Expecting a release is a little to much I am asking for as there aren’t any black metal acts around. Barring a few who try there is not much of an impact, not much of a following. I wouldn’t mind a less black metal following but a couple of tight acts could very well complete the circle.

Enter 1833 AD. A Delhi-band which doesn’t just claim to play black metal but justifies the genre. They are like hair on a just-shaved surface. Please laugh ! First heard their track Silver about an year back. Wanted more but there was no news.

1833 AD having been around since 2004 haven’t made it big and I personally feel the only reason being their relatively low presence on the gigging scene as their music kicks ass. Consisting of 4 members with Nishant ‘i love my neighbours’ Abraham on vocals/guitars, Rahul on guitars, Sushmit on bass and Shashank on the throne, 1833 AD is just what a sucker for melodic black metal like me wanted.

Influenced heavily by Norwegian black metal I did not require any other reason to atleast check them out. After all, I have been dependent on Norwegian metal for almost everything, more on that some other time.

This 4-teaser they came out with includes tracks from their upcoming full-length My Dark Symphony. What do I infer from these tracks – black metal in their distinctive style, and it doesn’t take the charm away one bit, whether it is the dark but intensely melodic guitar riffs or the orgasmic drumming, and the neat bass-work. Did I not mention the vocals ? – something you have not come across before. Unique. What Nishant is possessed by to produce such rasped vocals is still unknown. They do not borrow their music from their influences and yet are inspired. Hear them and you’ll know why.

Out of the 4 tracks, the most recent one Inheritance Evil is without doubt their best till date and My Dark Symphony is going to get 1833 AD its due. Recording wise I see complete justice being done. For an Indian metal band their sound is one of the best I have come across.

This release is going to be important for the country’s black metal scene as it has to start somewhere. From the capital city, so be it.

If you are into black metal you have to check out 1833 AD without any expectations (obviously) and you are up for a big pleasant surprise.

Moral – It takes just 4 Indians to create black metal.

“Fall To Pieces: A Memoir Of Drugs, Rock ‘N’ Roll, And Mental Illness”. a new book by Mary Forsberg Weiland

Posted on Nov 12, 2009 under International, Music | No Comment

Mary Forsberg Weiland lady of the frontman of some of the world famous bands like Stone Temple Pilots and former Vevet revolver has written a new book called “Fall To Pieces”: A Memoir Of Drugs, Rock ‘N’ Roll, And Mental Illness”

maryweiland_new

The book released on November 10th 2009.

In “Fall To Pieces”, Mary Forsberg Weiland talks about,

A childhood full of depression, instability, early addictive tendencies an overdoses of drugs.
Getting introduced with Scott Weiland, an aspiring musician before, at age 16.
The 4th of July party at Leonardo DiCaprio’s house in Malibu.
Hermany calls to Dave Navarro ex Red hot chilli peppers and member of JANE’S ADDICTION, who most of the times knew where  Scott Weiland was.
Scott Weiland marriage proposal which led to Mary’s seventh rehab stay.

The “Weiland Wardrobe Bonfire” a three day headline in Burbank, CA in the year 2007 that led to Mary’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and then her successful treatment, and a new life of health and hope for the future

When asked about the incident now, she  says:

“I unraveled. I don’t know all the answers to what happened that day I just remember my true self watched helplessly as I fell into deep mania. Writing about it certainly helped me answer a few questions… but not all.”

album review : Khooni Murga by Workshop

Posted on Oct 28, 2009 under Music | No Comment

Ok to begin with this album has trounced every other Indian album in terms of recording. Actually, coming from DSR this is not surprising considering the experience. And ofcourse the man himself The Demonstealer (in this band also) loves challenges because its not all the time that the frontman of an extreme metal band does vocals for a band that sounds like Workshop.

The album Khooni Murga (Murderous Cock tht is) is packed with 10 tracks which define the gamut to which talented musicians can go when they come together. That is Workshop for you providing brutality and humor at the same time.

Musically the album is rich with guitar solos by Raj, insane drumming by Hamza, jumping bass by Riju n cute vocals by Sahil. He is such an adroit person that u connect to whatever he makes, whether its music or Demonic Omelet.

The album begins with She Folked Up My Jazz and its a perfect song right from where it starts to the end, complete with every musical element that u want to hear. Song-wise its a hit, because the melody it carries is addictive, to an extent that i end up humming it all the time.

Next song on this naughty album is Pudhe Sarka. Its about a guy who is one of us travelling in a BEST bus and how he ends up hearing pudhe sarka and maage sarka from the dictator on the bus – the conductor. I Don’t know about others but i do not know marathi at all, but i sure do know little bit of what is part of this well-constructed song. And that is all thanks to my experiences in BEST.

So lets Pudhe Sarka with the review now.

Tracks 3 and 4 are interchanged on the album (but that is a gimmick i suppose). You are expecting the track Chhati Ke Saath Panga to begin and bang comes the soothing intro of I Came. Anyways moving on I Came is a track which you are bound to hear more than once, as it vulpinely explains the subtle art of masturbation and how nimble you are when indulging in the same.

Next up is a song about one horny Patel lusting for a chick whilst his favourite festival is on – Garba and hence the name Garba Gandu. Because he sure is a Gandu. This song has everything in place and you expect some gujju beats and yes it follows. Hamza goes on to try everything, including these beats.

How To Make A Demonic Omelet is the weakest track of the album for me, followed by Chhati Ke Saath Panga which is a somniferous track.

Next up is Bunty Aur Malika Sherwath, the track which got 15000 hits on youtube and still counting. I went about understanding exactly why people liked the track so much, and I feel its not only because its controversially funny but also because its the first Indian track that talks about sandas and bable. yay ! we Indians get turned on, u-know-how ! The high point of this track is the drumming with Hamza playing triplets. It instantly catches your attention. Overall I liked the track. If not then atleast the lyrics.

naughty foursome

Cookie Monster is the next track and The Demonstealer himself claims that this track is not metal (recalls him saying tht during the launch gig). I like the track. Its nice. But it took time for me to figure out the riff that got nominated for some best riff award. There are other songs by the band with better riffs.

The title track is the last one on this album and hence this short and hilarious album comes to an end. I do want more of Workshop.

Also i would like to mention Sahil’s effort to bring in that multiple vocals effect. Seriously brilliant. Its most notable in She Folked Up My Jazz and I Came. It beautifies the song majorly.

About the dvd that comes along, I have not checked it yet but I am sure it will be killer. Though i heard video for the bable song is not present.

Next obvious thing to mention is the detailed album artwork tht explains the concept and the band through sketches. Every song has its own customised work n its not loud. Its just there and fits perfectly.
Great work by Saroj Naidu and Sahil.
Also liked the WFC (Workshop Fan Club) thing.

The cd is accompanied with a poster and sticker which is something new. So yeah why not !

All in all this album is worth a buy coz its nefarious, bawdy and brutal too.

Buy it and play it. It fulminates from track 1 itself.
