It’s been a while since we heard Kesha’s powerful vocals belting out hit after hit. Her hiatus from the music scene wasn’t self-imposed, it had more to do with legalities and lawsuits she filed as a victim of sexual abuse. However, she’s back and stronger than ever with her first single Praying from her upcoming album, Rainbow. Listen to it and get all the feels –
This one is raw and real. Unlike her previous hits that involved a lot of autotune and synth-pop sounds, Praying is just her strong vocals, accompanied by a piano. The video is as psychedelic and shiny as Kesha herself, and in it, she talks and sings from the heart. It isn’t anymore about getting drunk, partying and liking guys with beards, but a more mature sound that fans are delighted to hear. Some are even comparing it to Lady Gaga’s Joanne and Katy Perry’s Prism. However, this is just the first song from Rainbow, so expect more to come from Kesha in the coming weeks.
In Praying, she first talks, as if to herself, asking: “Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams? Those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever? If I am alive, why? Why? If there is a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I’ve ever known? I’ve ever loved? Stranded. What is the lesson? What is the point? God, give me a sign, or I have to give up. I can’t do this anymore. Being alive hurts so much.”
Kesha’s last album was Warrior, released back in 2012 through Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records. The singer had filed a lawsuit against the music producer, claiming that he drugged her, sexually assaulted her and threatened her family over the course of her early career. Since her ongoing legal battle, she has managed to release just one track with Zedd called True Colors.
