After listening to Lady Gaga’s latest 5th studio album, JOANNE, critics and fans alike are pleasantly surprised by her versatile voice and music. From being a disco anthem queen with her earliest hits and later pop mini-documentaries, her raw vocals, lyrics and guitar playing have put her back in the spotlight for all the right reasons. Lady Gaga cannot be stopped and we are loving every minute of it.
If there is one thorn in Mother Monster’s side, it has to do with veteran pop-star, Madonna, who in the past Gaga praised as being her inspiration for being the first original act in the world of pop music. Madonna, on the other hand, has been quick to throw shade at her, saying that she copied her, and even threw in the adage “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Ouch. Gaga has been quiet on that front, until now, where she has seemed to gain a sudden super confidence about herself and did not mince words about Madonna in a recent radio interview.
Beats 1 Radio chat show host, Zane Lowe compared Lady Gaga one again to Madonna, considering their similar upbringings and musical legend. Gaga responded by saying
Madonna and I are very different, just saying……I wouldn’t make that comparison at all. I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna. She’s, you know, a nice lady and she’s had a fantastic, huge career. She’s the biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments, I write all my own music, I spent hours and hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer, I’m a writer. What I do is different.
She continued about their differences, meaning to imply that Madonna’s act is more about showmanship, while she is the real-deal musician without all the fanfare. “I’m not rehearsing over and over again to put on a show. There’s a spontaneity in my work. I allow myself to fail. I allow myself to break. I’m not afraid of my flaws. There are major differences between me and her.”
And Gaga does have a point here. Madonna may be the top grossing live act in the world, but Gaga, within the short years that she has comparatively been in the spotlight, has not only had chart topping hits, but has ventured into jazz with her Tony Bennett collaboration, Cheek To Cheek, she performed at the Oscars, was nominated for major acting awards in her portrayal as the hotel heiress in American Horror Story. These are feats that no contemporary before her has ever accomplished.
