Global Citizen Festival is a celebrated international event that mixes the best of popular music with social issues, to bring positive change to the world. While in New York it was celebrated with the likes of Rihanna and Metallica, the festival made its first appearance in India, in the city of Bollywood – Mumbai. A few months ago, social media started swirling with “rumors” of British band, Coldplay performing in the Asian sub-continent. Well, those rumors (for once) turned out to be true, and fans went wild to grab hold of tickets that were selling at prices that were triple or quadruple the amount than what tickets are usually sold for with visiting international artists.
But, this wasn’t going to be a solo Coldplay show, oh no. Bollywood had to get a dig into this commercial event, and the Global Citizen Festival was speckled with local stars making their appearances and encouraging the youth of the country to focus on Sustainable Development. There were also highly anticipated cameos being made by hip-hop mogul, Jay Z and former Disney star, Demi Lovato. Here are the major highlights from the Global Citizen Festival, Mumbai.
Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan kicked-off the event, coming on stage to introduce only the international stars of the evening.
There were a number of performances and appearances throughout the show from Bollywood kids including Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, among others.
Event organizer head, Vineet Jain appeared on stage, making an emphatic announcement where he promised that he would help generate 100,000 jobs in India.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi couldn’t actually make it to the event in person, so he appeared through video call, encouraging the youth of the country to continue down the path of progress.
Indian “rockstar” (he’s actually a Bollywood actor who worked in a Bollywood film about an indian rockstar), Farhan Akhtar, took the stage as well to belt out hits from his movie.
Proud dad of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, a poet like his late father, recited verses from his movie, Pink, which delved into women’s rights.
And then, Mr. Shawn Carter, aka Jay Z took the stage to perform Run This Town to a hyped-up crowd. The rapper never, ever disappoints the crowd.
Demi Lovato showed up in a gold ensemble and performed a couple of her hits. Hers was a soulful, all-out rendition.
And finally, Coldplay made their appearance, one that people waited all day for. In fact, if they just eliminated everyone else, fans would be happier listening to their favorite band for the entire show. They played crowd favorites like Fix You, Yellow, The Scientist and got the people to sing along to Paradise. They even brought on A R Rahman, probably the biggest musician in the Indian circle.
