Cuban American rapper Pitbull’s new single ‘Timber’ featuring pop star Kesha had its debut at the top of the UK singles chart on Sunday, January 5, 2014 and became the first No. 1 single in the country in 2014. Meanwhile, Ellie Goulding’s ‘Halcyon’ managed to top the album bestsellers for the first time, after spending 65 weeks on the chart.
Even though the beginning of the year is usually an idle sales period, Pitbull managed to sell an impressive 138,000 units of ‘Timber’, while ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams – which was last week’s No. 1 – sold additional 108,000 copies and had to settle with the runner-up spot.
The ‘I Know You Want Me’ rapper’s latest single – which is at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the moment – is the third No. 1 in the UK for both him and Kesha. Pitbull’s previous No. 1s in the country were both released in 2011 – ‘On The Floor’ with Jennifer Lopez and ‘Give Me Everything’ with Naver, Afrojack and Ne-Yo – while Kesha reached the top spot in 2009 with ‘Right Round’ with Flo Rida and then again in 2011 with ‘We R Who We R’.
Mumford & Sons’ ‘Babel’ prevented Ellie Goulding’s ‘Halcyon’ – which was released in October 2012 – from reaching the top spot in the UK, but the ‘Lights’ singer finally managed to claim it at the beginning of 2014. ‘Since I Saw You Last’ by Gary Barlow remained at No. 2, while Beyonce climbed to No. 3 with her fifth, self-titled album.
