Remembering the legend Dimebag Darrell on his 49th birth anniversary August 20, 2015 would have marked the 49th birthday of the guitar maverick and Hollywood Rockwalk inductee, Darrell Lance “Dimebag” Abbot. Born on August 20th 1966, Dimebag was one of the founding members of two legendary metal bands – Pantera and Damageplan.

Dimebag or Diamond Darrell, as he was earlier called, was an epic guitarist. His fingers danced across the fret board every time he played. His unique style of working his custom-made Dean guitar is what made him a metal icon. Dimebag’s tunes acquired a cult status to fans and other metal worshippers alike, including his metal contemporaries. However, he would later become one of the music legends gone before their time, after he was assassinated while performing for his band Damageplan in 2004.

Dimebag Darrell had always been a part of the music scene. He was born into a family of musicians and never forgot his roots. In fact, his brother Vinnie Paul, who was a co-founder of both bands, helped create the “groove metal” genre through their work. Their bands still hold a status along with other mega-metal groups like Megadeth and Van Halen. Though it may be surprising, Dimebag also contributed to country music quite significantly during his life as well. His potential and what more he could have achieved had he still been alive today can never be denied. In life and now in death, Dimebag left a void that cannot be filled, an indelible scar on the hearts of every member of the metal family around the world. Fans admit that his life was cut short, but still work towards keeping his memory and his music alive. This day that marks the rock star’s birthday will be commemorated around the world, in his hometown and at the site of his last resting place. Ride for Dime took place in Dallas on August 14, 2015.
