Frontman Kurt Cobain was desperate for a track that ranged in similar tone to the Pixies. In fact, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the late founder said: “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with the band so heavily that I should have been a part of the band – or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard”.

There have been a number of debates on how the song was titled that way. People usually felt that it had a rebellious signature to it. However, one thing is certain – Teen Spirit was the name of a perfume that Kurt’s steady girlfriend at the time, Tobi Vali used to wear. A popular tale is that Kurt wrote it after her because she smelt like Teen Spirit. Another, more popular theory is that Kathleen from Bikini Kills in fact wrote on a wall in a motel that Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit. The rest is history.

Kurt Cobain was not happy with the cult status the song got as compared to other tracks of the band. He has said in the past that the song was “an embarrassment”, even though he enjoyed playing it for crowds.
