Now that the Olympics have begun at Rio de Janeiro, Katy Perry’s Rise has taken a backseat. As per Lorde, Stay High hitmaker, Tove Lo just dropped the “song of the summer”
The song is titled Cool Girl and we took a listen to it. The track itself is very catchy, very breezy, very summery. It tells the story about a girl telling a guy that she doesn’t want to get into any sort of “labelled” relationship and just keep things casual, because she is – well, you guessed it – a cool girl. Take a listen to the audio version of Tove Lo’s latest, Cool Girl.
According to the singer herself, she was inspired by the thriller blockbuster, Gone Girl. The flick, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike and directed by David Fincher, gave Tove Lo the meat to write her latest soon-to-be-hit. She says a line from the movie caught her attention – “She’s gone full psycho, and she’s sitting there talking about, ‘He wanted a cool girl, so I ate pizza. I drank beer. I made a size 2. I didn’t give a f*ck that he checked out other women'”.
She means to mock the supposed “cool girl” – a woman who does what she thinks a guy will think is attractive, including being laid back about not wanting to get serious, having a fling, chill, whatever.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Tove Lo spoke about the single, expressing what the meaning was behind lyrics such as “I want to be free like you / I’m a cool girl”. “I’m totally fine with the grey area,” says the pop star, “That’s usually where it’s effortless. I can tell that he’s trying to play this game with me, and I’m like, yeah, go ahead. Do your thing. I’m being chill. But then in the bridge, I reveal that’s not what I want. I want to have a fire. I want to feel that”.
